Makhia Polk - 2026 NLC Washington DC Fellow
Makhia Polk (she/her) is an emerging leader and advocate for equity, justice, and civic engagement in Maryland. A first-generation college graduate from Anne Arundel County, she combines grassroots organizing with a strategic policy focus to empower underrepresented communities. Makhia earned her B.S. in Criminal Justice from Stevenson University and is pursuing a Master of Public Administration at American University, focusing on Race, Policy, and Applied Politics.
She currently serves as a legislative fellow at the Maryland General Assembly and has worked with U.S. Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester, the Maryland Attorney General’s Office, and The Sentencing Project, advancing youth justice and national policy initiatives. Makhia is preparing to run for the Anne Arundel County Democratic Central Committee and plans to pursue elected office in the future.
