Valeria Avila Guerrero

Entrepreneur. Candidate for MS, Self-employed, Student: Santa Clara University

Valeria immigrated at age sixteen from Mexico with her family, leaving a violent environment due to drug cartels. She quickly had to adapt to a new culture, language, and new education system as an undocumented student. With the support of great mentors and teachers, she was able to attend community college and transfer on a full ride to Santa Clara University. She graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and is now pursuing her master's in robotics and mechatronics. Her next challenge is to find alternatives for undocumented STEM professionals to practice their field via entrepreneurship as she prepares to become a consultant herself. In her spare time, she shares her story and the lessons she learned while applying to scholarships to fund her education by storytelling. Her dream is to combine her love for making and engineering and increase access to those who face constant obstacles to pursue their education.
