Samantha Mensah – Los Angeles

Samantha Theresa Mensah is a PhD candidate in UCLA’s Chemistry & Biochemistry department. Samantha conducts research on developing sensors that detect neurotransmitters in the brain to better understand the relationship between brain chemistry, mood, and behavior. Samantha received a B.S. in chemistry with a minor in nanoscience and technology at the University of Central Florida. Outside of conducting research in the lab, Samantha’s other academic passions include introducing others to the excitement of scientific discovery, dismantling obstacles that discourage diversity in STEM fields, and advocating for students struggling with mental illness. Samantha serves as co-President of UCLA’s Organization for Cultural Diversity in Science and leads this division-wide coalition advocating for increasing diversity and inclusion efforts in the sciences. As part of the 2020 BlackInX movement, Samantha co-founded BlackInChem, an organization that aims to amplify and improve the experience of Black voices in the chemical sciences. In her free time, Sammy likes to play video games, cosplay, surf, and spend time with her hairless cats.
