Community Development

Lisa Bergman was born and raised on a farm in rural Ohio, and now resides in south city, St. Louis, MO. In their free time, they enjoy spending time in nature while biking, hiking, reading in a hammock, and traveling. They are a proud math nerd, and their favorite number is 512. While they spent a couple years working in Corporate IT, their true passion lies in community development, specifically youth development, in order to reach those most marginalized or with the least access to opportunities and resources. They love camp and have spent numerous summers fostering personal growth in adolescents and teenagers, in both Ohio and California. They earned a B.S. in Mathematics and Computer Science with a minor in Psychology from Bowling Green State University in Northwest Ohio. Lisa currently volunteers on the web/tech team for the St. Louis Queer Support Helpline (SQSH). This past year they served as an Americorps VISTA member and as the Volunteer Coordinator at Home Sweet Home Furniture Bank based in Brentwood, MO. Prior to moving to St. Louis, Lisa lived in Zomba, Malawi where they were serving as a Teacher Trainer and Youth Development Specialist in Peace Corps Response Malawi. During these two years of service; they worked to improve STEM education at the secondary level and created 14 chess clubs, and many other fun community development projects. Specifically, Lisa designed and implemented a five-day youth leadership camp that ran two consecutive years and served a total of 300 secondary school students. They have also served two years as a Math Education volunteer in Peace Corps Lesotho, with a focus on female empowerment and improving data collection tools for the education project.
