Consuela Hendricks - Chicago

Consuela Hendricks is an urban ecologist, artist, community organizer, and founding co-president of People Matter (PM). A 4th generation Chicago native, she has over a decade’s experience improving race relations between Black/ Latine /Asian communities.

Consuela founded PM's Community Language Program, one of the world’s only dual immersion Cantonese and English classes taught through a social justice lens. She founded the Black Heroes of Chinatown celebration, an annual event uplifting Black community members essential to Chinatowns nationally. She brings her background in technology, urban studies, and youth mentorship, having mentored over 1000 low-income youth of color in Chicago. She has experience with government and policy at Senator Tammy Duckworth’s office, designing and implementing participatory planning at the Obama Foundation, and combatting displacement in Chicago’s gentrifying neighborhoods. She loves hearing and telling stories and watching youtube videos.
