Classroom Teacher, Santa Clara Unified District
Angela Alferos was raised in Milpitas, CA and graduated in 2005 from UC San Diego with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics for secondary education and a minor in cultural anthropology. She received her master’s degree in education in 2005. In 2004, she spent the year studying abroad in New Zealand, expanding her knowledge of different cultures and societies. She has since continued to find joy and curiosity in international travel. Growing up in the Bay Area and traveling overseas really sparked her interest in learning about and understanding other people. After completing college and graduate school and then spending 2 years teaching at the high school level in San Diego, Angela knew that she would return to be near the community during her youth. She is now teaching math at the middle school level in Santa Clara. She is currently in her 14th year of teaching. Angela is passionate about raising ethnic, cultural, and social justice awareness to students and colleagues at her school site. Angela is currently the treasurer of her school district's union. This is her second year as treasurer and she has been a site representative 2 years prior to that. Her drive for social justice continues to increase, particularly within the realm of education.
