Supervising Transportation Planner, City of Los Angeles
Nora Chin is a creative and passionate urban planner. She currently works as a Supervising Transportation Planner with the City of Los Angeles Department of Transportation, where she leads and implements sustainable and equitable, public transportation projects throughout Los Angeles. Nora was born in San Francisco, California to parents who immigrated from Myanmar, a Southeast Asian country, run by a military dictatorship. Nora knows first-hand the importance of being civically-engaged and fighting to defend basic civil liberties. The activist culture of the San Francisco Bay Area defines her values and has led her to pursue a career in transportation planning and government. Nora earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management Economics from the University of California, Santa Cruz. She worked for a number of non-profit organizations including Mercy Housing California, a national affordable housing developer and San Francisco’s Chinatown Community Development Center -- one of the first ethnic nonprofits to successfully defend Chinatown against gentrification and displacement in the 1970s, through the use of formal urban planning tools like master planning, tenant engagement, and coalition building. Nora’s goal is to make technical and complex government processes less opaque for everyone. Nora went on to complete a Master's degree in City and Regional Planning and a Master of Science in Engineering and Transportation Planning at the California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. Nora relocated to Los Angeles in 2016 and served as the City’s first-ever Deputy Chief Design Officer with the Mayor’s Office of Eric Garcetti. Nora is the Professional Development Chair for the Institute of Transportation Engineers - Southern California Chapter, a 2020 Los Angeles Council of Urban Professionals Fellow, and is a member of the Southern California Women in Transportation Seminar. Nora is a bibliophile, wants to be a chef like her father was, and has become a plant mom for up to 30 plants in her small apartment.
