A lifelong resident of North Carolina, Michael Barnhill has always been very interested in North Carolina politics. During college, he started his official work in campaigns by taking a semester off from school to work as a Field Organizer on Senator Kay Hagan's Senatorial campaign. Following the end of the campaign, he returned to finish his degree at East Carolina University. He then moved to Iowa to work for former Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley in his bid for the Democratic nomination for President. Although the work he had done in Iowa was incredibly meaningful and rewarding, his heart was still in North Carolina. In February of 2016 Michael returned to North Carolina where he served as then Attorney General Roy Cooper's Organizing Director for his successful Gubernatorial bid. After the campaign concluded he moved over to the North Carolina Democratic Party as the County and Community Organizing Manager, focuses on developing a year-round field program for the party. He left the NCDP in June of 2018 to be the Campaign Manager for Kyle Horton's campaign for North Carolina Congressional District 7. Through his time with the party and running Horton's campaign he developed a relationship with newly-elected State Senator Sam Searcy. Michael has been Senator Searcy's Legislative Aide since he was sworn-in in January of 2019.
