Lillie Benowitz is a convener, organizer, and relationship builder. She currently works as the Program Manager, Engagement at Environmental Initiative, a non-profit equipping leaders to work collaboratively at the intersection of a healthy environment, prosperous economy, and equitable society. Lillie leads the annual Environmental Initiative Awards, and focuses her efforts on centering relationships and equity throughout the organization’s events and engagement.
As the daughter of Jewish lesbian parents, Lillie realized from a young age that current societal structures did not allow the people she loves to exist fully. She now aligns her commitment to seek understanding of histories and power dynamics in order to ensure that those around her can exist fully. She believes that her liberation is bound up with the liberation of others and strives to build coalitions to make a more just world possible.
Prior to her work at Environmental Initiative, Lillie worked as Andrea Jenkins’ Communications Director during her campaign for Minneapolis City Council in 2017, notably managing her press and media coverage following her victory, and served as an Urban Scholar each summer from 2015 to 2017 at the Minneapolis Public Schools, Minneapolis Regulatory Services Department, and Minneapolis Civil Rights Department Equity Division respectively.
Lillie graduated magna cum laude from Mount Holyoke College with a double-major in Africana Studies and Politics, focusing on racial equity, resistance, movement building, and political theory. During her undergraduate career, Lillie completed an honors thesis analyzing workplace inclusion and organizational norms, entitled Justice at Work: Towards an Adaptable Workplace. Lillie is from Minneapolis, MN. She enjoys seeing live music and gathering people to share art and stories in her spare time.
