Lauren McElmeel grew up between two cornfields in small-town Illinois and left to study at Drake University, where she graduated with a BA in public relations, a minor in graphic design, and a passion for creating a more just and equitable world.

Lauren is the digital director for Progress Iowa, advocating for progressive policies and overseeing message development, social media strategy, and design. She co-hosts two weekly podcasts — What a Week and Persistent Broads — for the Potluck Media Network.

Before her current role at Progress Iowa, Lauren served as a legislative assistant for Iowa State Representative Ras Smith during the 2017 legislative session and as a human resources assistant for the Iowa Democratic Party during the 2016 election cycle.

Lauren serves as communications director for College and Young Democrats of Iowa, keeping young Iowans informed about political events and opportunities.

Outside of work, Lauren enjoys reading library books, listening to podcasts, knitting, and baking chocolate chip cookies.
