Kylie Gottschalk
ACLU of Iowa, Community Engagement Associate

Kylie Gottschalk is an eastern Iowa native from the small town of Eldridge. She graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 2014 with a dual B.A. degree in Public Relations and Spanish and currently serves as the Community Engagement Associate at the ACLU of Iowa, leading the ACLU’s public engagement and community outreach efforts throughout the state. Kylie has significant experience in advocacy, organizing, training, and teaching in the nonprofit and political campaign sector. Previously, Kylie served as a Field Organizer and then Legislative Assistant for State Senator Kevin Kinney, as a Bilingual Advocacy Strategist for Planned Parenthood of the Heartland, as a Regional Organizing Director for the Hillary Clinton presidential campaign, and as a Communications Associate for the Child and Family Policy Center.

Kylie’s commitment to elevating and centering the voices of impacted communities to bring lasting change started at a young age with the encouragement and example of her family and dedicated educators. In high school she was part of Teens For Tomorrow, in partnership with the Community Foundation of the Great River Bend, where she learned about local nonprofits and how they served her community and awarded certain organizations grants to continue or expand their work. It was then that she realized she wanted a career that served others. In college she really began to focus on immigrants rights and creating welcoming spaces for those from other countries in Iowa. As a student at UNI she worked as a Latino Services Case Manager at the YWCA, helping immigrants find and apply for jobs, make medical appointments, assist with landlord issues, and teach English classes.

In her free time,  Kylie enjoys teaching Spanish to young children with The Language Project, volunteering as an ELL teacher for adults, moonlighting as a bartender,  and satiating her adventurous spirit and love of cultural learning through international travel. Her favorite region to explore is Latin America and she is at her happiest with a good book on the beach. Her goal is to step foot on all seven continents someday.

Kylie aspires to run her own nonprofit or business someday with the possibility of also running for elected office. She believes her interpersonal communication skills, ability to build authentic relationships, and curious spirit will serve her well in creating spaces where all people feel welcome, supported, and can learn more about the world around them.
