Gabriela Fuentes
Advocacy Strategist, Planned Parenthood North Central States

Throughout her life, Gabriela Fuentes has always tried to balance her two passions: serving her community and the arts. She was born in La Paz, Bolivia and she is also Chilean and American. Her passions encouraged her to finish her Bachelor’s degree in Social Communication Studies with a Diploma in Higher Education from the Bolivian Catholic University (Universidad Católica Boliviana).

In 2015, she decided to move in the USA and continued her studies at Ohio University, where she got her Master's degree in Communication and Development with a Graduate Certificate in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, and worked as a Spanish Instructor.
Her journey with the arts began as a flamenco dancer when she was 3 years old, but she had to stop due to an injury. In 2007 she joined a local group from her university in La Paz and began creating independent theatrical pieces inspired by the local context and presenting them inside and outside her hometown.

During her academic studies in Bolivia and the USA, she continued expanding her artistic practice combining it with her work and volunteering with local non-profits focused on assisting low-income communities, women, and victims of human trafficking. She worked with OXFAM, UN, PAHO, Hivos, Ohio University's Vagina Monologues cast, Open Door Rep (Iowa), to name only a few.

Gabriela is currently working as an Advocacy Strategist in Central Iowa with Planned Parenthood North Central States, additionally enjoys using her language and cultural skills to serve as an interpreter and Spanish teacher, and she advocates for intersectional global issues such as reproductive justice, immigration, and culture.
