Erica Barz
One Iowa, Communications and Grants Coordinator

Erica grew up in La Porte City, a small town in northeast Iowa. She graduated from Simpson College in 2015 with a B.A. in English and minors in multimedia journalism and women’s/gender studies. During her time at Simpson, she joined Simpson Pride (the first LGBTQ group she’d ever encountered) and became passionate about using her power and privilege to create a more just and equitable world. She spent her last semester interning at PFLAG, a network of support and advocacy groups for LGBTQ folks and their allies, in Washington, D.C.

Erica currently serves as the communications and grants coordinator at One Iowa, a statewide LGBTQ advocacy organization. In that role, she develops the organization’s outreach materials, manages grant applications and reports, and cultivates positive press relations and coverage. The Des Moines chapter of Social Media Club recognized her work on One Iowa’s social media presence at the 2018 Hashie Awards. She also serves as secretary of the Des Moines Civil and Human Rights Commission’s LGBT advisory council and chairs the marketing committee of the Grant Professional Association Central Iowa chapter.

In her spare time, Erica enjoys reading, playing video games, exploring Des Moines, and spending time with her partner and friends.
