Emilia Alvarez Gamboa has been a Valleyite since 1991. She is an educator with ten years of experience teaching literature to high school students across South Texas. She has taught English in Mission, Donna, McAllen, and Edinburg. Her role as an educator is to teach tolerance, inspire students to be critical thinkers, and encourage students to be civically minded. Emilia previously served on several school committees and was elected as secretary for McAllen AFT, a local teacher union. She is currently the AFT Building Representative for Edinburg High School. Emilia stays actively engaged with her local community by joining community lead actions from LUPE, the No Border Wall Coalition, and other local groups. She is currently a child advocate for The Young Center, a nonprofit that serves unaccompanied minors. Her outreach goes beyond the classroom. Emilia loves to run, paint, and dance in her free time. Her lifetime goal is to help others in different capacities and encourage others to become engaged in their community.
