Franciscan Volunteer Ministry, Associate Director

Lizzy Heurich was born in Philadelphia, but raised in Cary, NC.  Lizzy returned back to the Philadelphia area to attend college at Villanova University.  In 2013, she graduated with a B.A. in Political Science, a minor in Environmental Studies, and a concentration in Peace and Justice.

Instead of entering directly into the workforce, Lizzy decided to first do a year of service through the Augustinian Volunteers.  Lizzy served as the Coordinator for Weekly Service and Volunteerism at Merrimack College in North Andover, MA, where she connected college students to local volunteer opportunities within the community at organizations such as the Boys and Girls Club.

During her time at Merrimack, Lizzy developed a love for working with college-aged students.  After her year, she moved back down South to earn her M.Ed. in Higher Education Administration from North Carolina State University.  During her time as a graduate student, Lizzy worked in both Housing, Dining, and Residence Life at Duke University and in the Academic Support Program for Student-Athletes at NC State.  Lizzy also spent a summer interning for New Student Orientation at Metropolitan State University of Denver in Colorado.

Lizzy returned to Philadelphia in the summer of 2016 and has been serving as the Associate Director for Franciscan Volunteer Ministry (FVM) since then.  FVM is a year-long service program that places volunteers in Philadelphia, PA; SIlver Spring, MD; and Durham, NC. Volunteers serve in placements such as soup kitchens, schools, and prisons.  Lizzy’s primary job responsibility is volunteer recruitment. She has increased the number of relationships with colleges and universities by 60 percent. This has led to the doubling of the amount of volunteers participating in the program.

After the 2016 election, Lizzy could not sit on the sidelines any longer.  Lizzy has been an active member of the Swing Left PA-01 chapter for the last 18 months, where she has gone from novice canvasser to leading them.  In this time, Lizzy has reignited her passion for politics, specifically for electing progressive politicians. She is looking forward to being an NLC Fellow in order to grow her knowledge of policy and campaign management.

When Lizzy has a free moment, she enjoys going on runs and hikes, reading, doing jigsaw puzzles, and watching Villanova basketball with friends.
