Devin Hunter was born in Decatur, GA and raised primarily by his mother who worked in the DeKalb County public school system where he also matriculated. His heart of service started with the Boy Scouts of America where he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout after 12 years and hundreds of hours of community service. After graduating he attended Tuskegee University then answered the call to National Service by joining the U.S. Air Force finishing a 6-year career in the Reserves including a deployment in 2015. Upon returning, Devin joined AmeriCorps in San Jose, CA with City Year to continue answering that call. With City Year, he served over 3400 hours in schools delivering high-quality interventions and after-school support for students below grade level.
Devin is currently serving as an Impact Manager on staff at City Year San Jose/Silicon Valley, where he develops, and mentors AmeriCorps Members completing National service of their own and oversees a response-to-intervention and after school program in East San Jose. In addition, he serves on the City Year San Jose Diversity, Belonging, Inclusion and Equity Council where he pushes to make actionable changes within the organization with respect to our work with students and young adults.
Devin's community has also extended to youth in Oakland, CA where he recently completed the Akili Fellowship through Flourish Agenda designed to support youth who have experienced trauma through healing-centered engagement. He is working toward creating equitable educational environments in and around the public-school system and hopes to become an Executive Director of his own non-profit or district administrator in the future. He is an avid reader and creative that uses music and poetry as his mediums and encourages students to do the same.
