Devery Doran has found her home in San Francisco by way of Massachusetts and Texas, where she grew up. The daughter of a single-Latinx mother, Devery learned early that education was the best way for advancement and opportunity. Devery attended Harvard University where she studied Romance Languages and Literatures and Anthropology with an emphasis on Latin American Studies. She wrote an honors thesis called Behind the Bikinis: How Elites Influence Beach-Going Culture in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She was particularly proud of this piece as it was her first substantial research project that explored, race, class, and gender, which has become central to her work.
Devery is passionate about building opportunities for non-traditional and underrepresented talent to find pathways into education and ultimately into fulfilling careers. From her experience in Education, Tech, and career training program development, Devery has always focused on access. Devery graduated from the University of Texas, McCombs School of Business on a fully sponsored fellowship from the Consortium for Graduate Study in Management program. She attended business school with the imperative of learning how to make a business case for why diversity and inclusion is important.
Devery's roles have ranged from serving as a Harvard Admissions Officer building out recruiting initiatives and support systems for students from lower SES and underrepresented backgrounds; to managing the Hired, Inc technical recruiting platform where she increased the number of women and POCs hired; to building out tech sales training programs at SVAcademy to ensure that young graduates could build careers that utilized their educational backgrounds and gave them the practical tools they need to build a fulfilling and lucrative career. The motivating goal behind all her roles was to help guide, and promote underrepresented talent into greater opportunity.
The trajectory of her achievements is based in a foundation of hard work, influenced by her network, coupled with initiatives that were in place that gave her a chance to prove herself. She knows she has been incredibly fortunate and wants others from non-traditional backgrounds to have access to life-changing opportunities as she did. She is excited to join NLC to network, learn, and connect with others to have a greater reach and impact in these goals. She is excited to surround herself with passionate people who want real change.
