Catie Boon
Graduate Student

Catie grew up on the Eastside of Milwaukee before moving to Northfield, Minnesota to attend school at St. Olaf College. After receiving her bachelor’s degree in Family Studies in 2007, Catie worked many positions within the non-profit sector that took her all over the Midwest. While mostly working in youth- serving organizations, Catie lived in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, rural towns in northern Wisconsin and suburban Indiana. While she is thrilled to be settling down back in her hometown of Milwaukee, the unique experience of living in so many diverse settings has provided Catie with insights into how local and state systems impact the quality of life for individuals across the spectrum -  knowledge that can help to unite diverse communities towards greater change.

Catie is currently in her last semester of Indiana University’s Master of Social Work Program where her passion for social justice and drive to address Milwaukee’s disparity gaps have developed. During this program Catie’s work in Gary, IN with women facing homelessness led her to the realization that many of the women she met were dealing with the same issues of accessing services. Catie began digging into these systemic issues and became a passionate advocate for policy and systems change within this community. Since moving back to Milwaukee, Catie has had the opportunity to develop this passion and skills further during her internship with Community Advocates Public Policy Institute where she conducted research on the state of Milwaukee’s youth services and advocated for accessible community-based services for Milwaukee’s at-risk youth.

Catie is looking forward to completing her MSW degree in December 2018 and having more time to spend with her husband and two kids, preferably outside near water, or with a cup of coffee
