Ben was born in Minnesota but grew up in various parts of Iowa until settling in Des Moines in time to attend middle and high school there. After graduating from Hoover High School, Ben attended the University of Iowa where he earned his BBA in Finance and his BS in Political Science. With a few years of work experience under his belt, Ben went back to school part-time to obtain his MBA from the University of Iowa. He works at Kum & Go within the Finance, Planning, and Analysis Department as a Financial Business Analyst where he helps in the construction of the budget, long-term forecasting, and scenario planning.
Ben has become an outspoken advocate for healthcare access and patient rights after being diagnosed with cancer before turning 30. After surgery, four rounds of chemotherapy, two hospitalizations, and a lot of help from friends and family - he is in remission. Ben uses his experience as a patient and survivor to inform his position as a member of the Patient Advisory Board for the Adolescent and Young Adult Program at John Stoddard Cancer Center around things like what information patients might need and ideas for programs and activities for patients and survivors. He is also a legislative advocate with the American Cancer Society: Cancer Action Network where he speaks with legislators about how they too can help patients and survivors of cancer.
