Tell Your Story: Alumni and Chapter Awards
Throughout the NLC community, you’ve witnessed how incredible volunteers dedicate their time and resources to the NLC Institute, chapter operations, and national network. Let’s celebrate the progress they’ve made to ensure NLC lives up to its values and mission.
Please nominate an outstanding alumni and/or NLC chapter to win awards at Convention! Nominations close on June 1, 2022.
Alumni and Chapter Collective Action Awards
The Collective Impact awards will be awarded to one chapter and one NLC alumni. The Alumni Collective Impact Award recognizes one NLC alum, or group of NLC alumni, who has organized community-wide and systems-wide change with the help of others. The Chapter Collective Impact Award recognizes one NLC chapter’s programming or efforts that are uplifting the collective impact model.
Alumni and Chapter Equity Champions Awards
The Equity Champions Awards will be awarded to one chapter and one NLC alumni. The Alumni Equity Champion Award recognizes an NLC alumni who has advanced equity in the causes and organizations they serve. The Chapter Equity Champion Award recognizes an NLC chapter that has made new advancements in incorporating equity into their programming and operations.
Alumni and Chapter Power of Stories Awards
The Power of Stories awards will be awarded to one chapter and one NLC alumni. The Alumni Power of Stories Award recognizes an NLC alumni who uses their personal story to not only shift hearts and minds, but policies and structures too. The Chapter Power of Stories Award recognizes an NLC chapter’s programming or efforts are uplifting the power of storytelling.
Alumni and Chapter Capstone Awards
The Capstone Awards will be awarded to one chapter and one NLC alumni. The Alumni Capstone Award recognizes an NLC alumni who has transformed their Institute Capstone project into an equitable, sustainable impact in their community and beyond. The Chapter Capstone Award recognizes an NLC chapter’s outstanding Capstone project innovations and improvements.
Sherry Matusoff Merfish Reproductive Justice & Equity Award
This annual leadership award is named in honor of NLC Board Member and reproductive justice leader, Sherry Matusoff Merfish. This award was founded by the family of Sherry Matusoff Merfish to honor her legacy of fighting for reproductive rights and her faith in the NLC community to shape a more equitable future. This alumni award recipient will be honored at 2022 NLC Convention and have their Convention travel and accommodations covered.
Chapter Curriculum Award
This award recognizes an NLC chapter’s outstanding curriculum innovations and improvements, including adapting lessons to local issues, recruiting dynamic speakers and trainers who engage Fellows in creative ways, or creating collaborative activities that connect Fellows to the materials, each other, and even other chapters.
Chapter Mentorship Award
This award recognizes an NLC chapter’s outstanding mentorship innovations and improvements, including finding creative ways to help Fellows include dynamic mentorship in their everyday lives, or creating opportunities to introduce Fellows to potential mentors or give them access to a larger pool of mentors coordinated by the Chapter.
Chapter Alumni Engagement Award
This award recognizes an NLC chapter’s outstanding efforts to engage alumni in the NLC Institute, as well as the recruitment and selections process. The chapter has developed opportunities for their newest cohort of Fellows to meet alumni and understand how to engage with NLC after the Fellows’ Institute experience.
Chapter Advancement Award
This award recognizes an NLC chapter’s outstanding fundraising innovations and improvements, including creating creative ways for Fellows to learn fundraising, partnering with high-dollar and values-aligned sponsors for chapter events, and hosting inclusive events that inspire community investment.

What are the COVID requirements for this event?
New Leaders Council continues to closely monitor public health conditions and will always operate following all state and county health orders to safeguard its community and event attendees. Guidelines may change at any time and this page will be updated to reflect current conditions.
New Leaders Council will require all attendees to be fully vaccinated for COVID before arriving for the 2022 National Convention. Requests for applicable exemptions (medical and religious) will be considered. These requests must be communicated prior to purchasing an event ticket.
What are the accommodation arrangements for guests?

I am an NLC volunteer, how do I register for convention?
NLC is happy to offer our volunteers a subsidized ticket price of $175. Additional subsidies are available to you if you are a Chapter Director, NPC, NDC, Caucus Lead, or LEAD Trainer. Please contact staff at [email protected] with any questions.
I’m an alumni who won an award! What do I win?
Congrats! Alumni awardees will receive one high-quality trophy and a complimentary headshot from our Convention’s professional photographer. Nominations for Alumni and Chapter awards close on June 1. The NLC Convention Awards Committee (made up of NLC senior volunteers and staff) will review submissions and complete deliberations by June 21. Alumni award winners will be notified that they won on June 21, in advance of convention, so you have time to plan travel. Alumni awardees will be announced publicly at the NLC Awards Dinner & Celebration dinner on July 23.
My chapter won an award! What do I win?
Congrats! Chapter awardees will receive one trophy per chapter and complimentary headshots for your attending chapter board members from our Convention’s professional photographer. Nominations for Alumni and Chapter awards close on June 1. The NLC Convention Awards Committee (made up of NLC senior volunteers and staff) will review submissions and complete deliberations by June 21. All chapters will be notified of the top three chapters in each category by July 1.
What is the dress code?
You can expect a variety of experiences at Convention. Be prepared to bring business-casual attire and cocktail attire for receptions. This year’s convention will also feature service projects, so please bring close-toed shoes and comfortable clothing that can get dirty.
What is the expected weather?
The average temperature in Philadelphia in July is 69/86° F. Patchy rain is possible.
What food is covered by my paid ticket?
Your ticket will cover breakfast, lunch, and snacks, and a Celebration Dinner on Saturday evening.
I am a person with disabilities, will I be able to get accomodations?
NLC is happy to work to provide accommodations, please indicate on the registration form and reach out to us at [email protected]. ADA-accessible rooms are available at the Doubletree upon request and NLC HQ can make audio and visual accommodations as well.
Can my partner and children attend too?
Yes, guests of NLC alumni are welcome to attend Convention, provided they also purchase a ticket if they are over 18 years old. Topics discussed may feature adult content including sex, drugs, and alcohol. Speakers and Spark!Talk presenters may use expletive language in their presentations. That being said, Convention is most appropriate for 18 – 99 year olds. All children under 18 must be supervised by an adult at all times.
Can non-NLC alumni attend?
As long as a ticket is purchased, Convention is open to all NLC alumni, Fellows, applicants, partners, sponsors, and supporters.

Unfortunately, registration closes 48 hours prior to the event start date. You will not be able to register at Convention.

Are there any age restrictions for registration?
NLC is inclusive of all ages. Topics discussed may feature adult content including sex, drugs, and alcohol. Speakers and Spark!Talk presenters may use expletive language in their presentations. That being said, Convention is most appropriate for 18 – 99 year olds.
How do I apply to be or recommend a speaker for Convention?
To recommend yourself, or another person, to be a speaker please complete this form by June 1, 2022. NLC makes no guarantees that we will be able to accommodate all recommendations.
If something comes up and I can no longer attend, can I get a refund?
If you are no longer able to attend Convention you may request a refund by July 21 or, if you are willing and able you may donate your purchased ticket to a Fellow or NLC volunteer by notifying us by June 1 at [email protected]
Is there airport transportation to and from the hotel?
Taxis are a flat fee of $28.50 each way, outside shuttle service can be arranged at the ground transportation desk at the airport and it approximately $30 per person each way. Or of course there are also Ubers and Lyfts.
I am driving to Convention. Is parking covered in my ticket or hotel reservation?
No. Overnight self-parking is $35.00 and not included in the ticket price or hotel reservation.
What happens if the event is canceled due to unforeseen circumstances or circumstances beyond NLC’s control?
In the event of situations beyond our control, attendees will have the option to receive a refund, or apply their ticket purchase to the date of the rescheduled event.

Will there be alcohol at Convention?
Yes, alcohol will be available at the NLC Dinner & Awards Ceremony on Saturday evening, and may also be available during other Convention-related receptions and off-site venues. Attendees will be able to leave the event space for dinner and may purchase and consume alcohol. We ask that if guests choose to drink alcohol, they do so responsibly. All volunteers are expected to exercise good judgment and moderation and all volunteers are expected to comply fully with all laws (including laws prohibiting the operation of motor vehicles while under the influence of alcohol), and to take safety precautions including arranging for a designated sober driver.
For other substances, we ask that attendees refrain from using, distributing, or otherwise possessing controlled substances, including recreational or medical marijuana.
