Check the Newsstands: NLC Women on the Cover of Time Magazine
In the wake of the first anniversary of the historic Women’s March, Time Magazine has revealed its upcoming cover story: The Avengers: First They Marched, Now They are Running For Office. And NLC family members Freeholder Ashley Bennett and Congressional Candidate Lauren Underwood are highlighted on the cover!
After a male Freeholder in Atlantic County, New Jersey mocked the Women’s March last January, asking on Facebook “Will the women’s protest end in time for them to cook dinner?” Ashley Bennett, NLC New Jersey Fellow ’18, stepped up to run against him. This past November, Ashley won by nearly 1,000 votes out of 14,000 cast.
Lauren Underwood, NLC Washington DC Fellow ’14, is taking on Illinois Congressman Randy Hultgren, after he broke his pledge to not vote for a healthcare bill that excludes preexisting conditions. Lauren, who has been encouraging her female friends to step up and run as well, says about female candidates, “Now we have this idea that we can lead. It’s like this ripple effect.”
Ashley and Lauren are not alone. New Leaders Council has women across the country stepping up into leadership positions. Through the NLC Institute, our fellows are gaining the skills to run for office, manage campaigns, create start ups and networks of thought leaders.
NLC is proud of Ashley and Lauren and all our community members who are fighting for progressive change in their communities and workplaces.
