New Leaders Council

New Leaders Council Dallas

New Leaders Council-Dallas will convene its first fellowship class in January 2018.

NLC-Dallas is now seeking applications from those who wish to join the local board to launch the chapter.

The timeline for joining the board and launching the chapter:

  • Apply now, using the same application we use for fellows. We'll get to know about you, and you'll understand the application process when you are recruiting potential fellows.
  • Applications will close at 3pm EST on November 14, 2016.
  • Your application will be reviewed and you may be invited for an interview between the 15th and 30th of November.
  • The new board will be announced in December.
  • The new board will take part in a mini-institute over three weekends in spring 2017 to learn about NLC, undergo some of our core trainings, and plan for the first fellowship class.

Who are we looking for to serve on our board?

  • Younger professionals in their 30s and 40s who are serving in leadership roles in their profession or community.
  • People with connections in diverse communities.
  • People with a wide range of skills and experiences. We need people who work in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors.
  • NLC explicitly encourages people who do not see themselves or their community reflected in civic or political leadership to apply and help to change that.

In order to create and operate a chapter, board members must have:

  • A progressive policy orientation. Board members need not be involved in politics, but should be interested in civic engagement in some fashion.
  • Access to resources that will benefit the chapter. This includes fundraising to support the program. Resources can also include meeting spaces that can be used at no cost, or relationships with local experts who can help teach some parts of the curriculum that address local issues or building-block skills.
  • A willingness to seek out new people and new connections in the service of building a diverse organization.
  • A desire to recruit, train, and support a rising generation of progressive, civic-minded young leaders.

To get a feel for the kinds of people who serve on NLC local boards, visit some of our chapter pages, including Houston, New Jersey, Atlanta, and Boston.
