NLC welcomes almost 800 Fellows to the NLC Family in 2016!

If you’ve been keeping an eye on social media, you know that last weekend the first of our chapters kicked off the 2016 NLC Institute! Be sure to follow the action by following #NLCInstitute and #NLCFamily.

Our NLC Institute depends on you: your time, expertise, and your continued support. To help make NLC even stronger, please take a minute to make a contribution here.

Welcome 2016 NLC Institute Class!

This year we welcome almost 800 Fellows to the NLC family.  Across the country, Fellows go through the NLC Life Entrepreneurship program this month, which sets the tone for the entire Institute. Fellows reflect on their lives and, through guided exercises, determine how best to achieve their individual and community goals, using their cohort as a lasting support.

Please join NLC in welcoming these Fellows by sharing posts on social media (you can find information on your chapter’s social media here).

The NLC Institute is a highly competitive program. This year we received over 6,000 applications and nominations for only 800 available fellowships.  If you applied but were not selected, rest assured that NLC wants you to stay connected. Be on the look out as we roll out new training, educational, and networking opportunities specifically for you.

Thank you especially to our hundreds of volunteers nationwide working diligently to identify new Fellows and coordinating Institute sessions in their local community.

The NLC Institute comes at no cost to our Fellows, but is not free to operate. Please take a minute to make a financial contribution here:

Bringing to bear his background as a Millennial media strategist, TV news contributor and nationally syndicated radio host, Richard will advise NLC on media outreach, and strategic messaging and training.  This new position will ensure that the NLC remains on the cutting edge of the progressive community.

Former NLC Chairman of the Board of Directors appointed by the U.S. Small Business Administration to be Head of the Office of Investment and Innovation

Since NLC was founded, Mark Walsh has served as a transformative leader on its Board of Directors. On December 7, this record of service, among his many other achievements, led to him being selected to serve in a crucial administration role. On that day, Mr. Walsh was chosen by Administrator Maria Contreras-Sweet, head of the U.S. Small Business Administration, to serve as SBA’s Associate Administrator for the Office of Investment & Innovation. This office administers the SBA’s Small Business Investment Companies (SBIC) and Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs.

In his new role, Mark will oversee an office that has supplied equity capital, long-term loans and management assistance to qualifying small businesses since 1959.   He will also oversee the program which helps entrepreneurs successfully commercialize their products and services through the several federal agencies including to provide small businesses competitive funding for projects that meet government research needs and boost technological innovation in the public and private sectors.

You can read the full press release here, and be sure to congratulate Chairman Emeritus Walsh!

NLC4 Events

This year you will have many opportunities to take part in NLC & NLC4 policy briefings and discussions, connecting with policy experts and elected officials, or further your training in several areas, no matter where in the country you find yourself. Be sure to check out the NLC4 events calendar and join us at one of our events!

We are only two week into 2016, and already we have seen the strongest class in NLC history. We are moving forward, leading together, and setting the stage for the future. We are excited to have you as a part of it.
