Impressive May

Dear NLC Family,

I wanted to be sure to send you a quick update on the latest with NLC and a reminder on our upcoming Retreat. It’s been a tremendous year so far.

NLC New Jersey’s Health Care Summit
Last Saturday, NLC New Jersey hosted their first Health Care Summit: Fostering Progressive Change in New Jersey’s Health Care System. This event was a first step in an ongoing important policy discussion, and broke a news story on key healthcare legislation that was just introduced the week before.

Northeast Conversation in Philadelphia
Two weekends ago we hosted the 2015 Northeast Conversation in Philadelphia. Members of our northeast chapters convened alongside David L. Cohen, Executive Vice President, Comcast; Burns Strider; Roz McPherson, President, Urban League of Philadelphia; Kenyatta Johnson, Philadelphia City Council Member; Krystal Ball, MSNBC; and others -- for a day of dynamic discussion about our embattled and emerging Constitutional rights.

The discussions were incredibly dynamic and timely as we were challenged to think outside of the box to think through solving today’s most pressing issues on economic inequality and social justice and to do so according to our shared progressive values.

Fellows Fundraisers – support our Fellows and pay it forward
NLC Fellows are also currently launching their Fellows Fundraiser, a grassroots fundraiser planned and executed by the Fellows.

We continue to have tremendous support from our guests such as Kathy Sheehan, Mayor of Albany; Felix W Ortiz, Assistant Speaker of the New York State Assembly; Seth Magaziner, General Treasurer of Rhode Island; Jorge Elorza, Mayor of Providence; and more.

National Leadership Retreat – July 23 through 25, Washington D.C.
Our annual leadership retreat is fast approaching. This year, we will convene where the nexus of the nation’s conversations is taking place.

We will kick off the Retreat on Thursday at noon with NLC on the Hill, where registrants of the conference will participate in meet and greet meetings with their members of Congress. Speakers and agenda to be announced soon.

The NLC Retreat is open to current NLC members and to the general public. This is a great way to connect, strategize, and recharge. You can register here: http://www.newleaderscouncil.org/2015_national_leadership_retreat

Institute Capstones
The NLC Capstone Project is an individual’s detailed plan for achieving their personal progressive goals.

This month, we have seen Capstones on topics ranging from Direct Primary Care Clinics to Using Research and Evaluation to Advance Issues of Social Justice to Inclusivity in Tech Training and Jobs for Veterans.

“I don't know if I would have pushed myself to do this work (capstone project) if it weren't for NLC.” -Nick Arreola, 2015 NLC Omaha Fellow

We’re excited to see the materialization of these projects.

I hope I see you in DC in July.
