Joel Brown, Founder and Chief Visionary Officer, Pneumos LLP

Joel A. Brown is the Chief Visionary Officer for Pneumos LLP, a San Francisco-based management consultant firm which specializes in cultural competency, inter-cultural conflict, cross-cultural awareness, leadership training, organizational development, and life coaching. A graduate from the Virginia School of Law, Joel partners with clients to help them meet their personal objectives, accelerate employee/member growth, and achieve measurable business results. Joel has acted as a liaison between the LGBT and African-American Communities, and has a long-standing record of volunteering with LGBT non-profits, and teaching creative workshops to at-risk youth.

Katherine Casey, Program Associate, Education Pioneers

Katherine believes that new ideas and new leadership, shaped by collaborative, hand-on learning, can transform American education. After receiving her degree in American History from Stanford, Katherine worked at the Haas Center for Public Service at Stanford training student leaders and participated in the Coro Fellowship in Public Affairs, studying public policy at the Mayor's Office of Criminal Justice, California School Employee's Association, and San Francisco School Alliance. More recently, as Grants Manager at the Silver Giving Foundation, Katherine supported and learned from a wide range of schools, after-school programs, and policy-makers throughout the Bay Area. Katherine currently works with the Education Pioneers' Bay Area team in Oakland where she recruits talented students from top-tier graduate programs and matches them with local education organizations focused on innovation, management, research, and policy.

Crystal Cole, Business Incubator Manager, BUILD

Crystal Cole is a Spelman College alumna, class of 2006. She is originally from La Marque, Texas, but over the past two and a half years has made her home Oakland, California. After Crystal graduated from Spelman, she went on to work for Wells Fargo in the Wholesale Internet Technology group and more recently, the Health Benefit Services Group. Crystal currently works for a non-profit called Business United in Lending and Development (BUILD), where she serves under-resourced youth in Oakland as the Business Incubator Management.

Derek Duarte, Law Clerk, City of Berkeley, City Attorney’s Office

Derek Duarte recently graduated from UC Hastings College of the Law and passed the California Bar Exam. He is currently working at the City Attorney's office for the City of Berkeley handling a wide variety of litigation and policy matters. Derek recently won first place at the National Environmental Law Negotiation Championship with his devoted girlfriend, Thao Le. He is wildly enthusiastic about all things political and has been very active in several recent candidate and initiative campaigns.

Jessica Stewart, Operations & Development Manager, Elmhurst Community Prep Middle School

Jessica Stewart graduated from Auburn University in 2005 with a degree in Political Science. She then joined Teach for Americaand taught middle school math and science for three years in East Oakland. While teaching, her students achieved some of the highest academic growth of any class in the Oakland Unified School District and she won the Teacher of the Year award in 2007. She now works as the Operations Manager for the school, teaches in the after school program at another school, works as Teach For America's Secondary Math Resources Expert, and is a Fellow for the President of the Oakland Board of Education.

Matt Haney, Law and Education Masters Candidate, Stanford University

Matt Haney grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and attended UC Berkeley, where he majored in Political Science and Urban Development. After graduating from college, he worked in Los Angeles at the Museum of Tolerance, and then at the War Crimes Chamber in Sarajevo. He then served as a California State Senate Fellow working as a Legislative Aide for State Senator Joseph Simitian. He studied for an LLM in International Human Rights Law as a George Mitchell Scholar at National University of Ireland Galway. Matt is currently enrolled in a joint JD in law and MA in education program at Stanford.

Meena Harris, User Operations Specialist for Growth and User Insights, Facebook

Meena Harris graduated from Stanford University in 2006 and currently works at Facebook, a popular social networking internet company. In 2008, Meena was involved with the Barack Obama Presidential campaign and worked in five different states, starting in New Hampshire and ending in New Mexico. She was active in both the campaign's field operation, primarily focusing on the youth vote, and also fundraising efforts in Northern California. Meena is passionate about working with underprivileged youth of color and providing a voice to those communities that have been historically voiceless. Meena will be going to Harvard Law School in the Fall of 2009.

Jennifer Hong, Office Manager, Lightpole, Inc.

Jennifer K. Hong was born in South Korea and immigrated to the United States in 1995. She recently graduated from UC Berkeley with a B.A. in Legal Studies; currently works at LightPole, Inc and volunteers at Asian Women Shelter. She is interested in working with human sex trafficked victims and in the future, hopes to start up a nonprofit organization that gives social and legal services to these victims. She looks forward to returning to school for Masters in Public Policy and Juris Doctorate

Tyler Huebner, Associate Consultant, ICF International

Tyler Huebner is a consultant in the San Francisco office of ICF International, a global consulting services firm, specializing in energy efficiency and corporate carbon projects. In addition, he is a co-founder and adviser to Energy Crossroads, an international student-run organization that brings together students from multiple disciplines to forge a clean, prosperous, and secure energy future. He holds a masters degree in the Atmosphere & Energy Program from Stanford University and a bachelor's in electrical engineering from The University of Iowa.

Kula Koenig, Project Manager, Capitol Campaigns

Kula Koenig works as project manager for Capitol Campaigns, a political consulting firm in Sacramento. She has experience organizing national and local campaigns and manages a wide variety of projects including fundraising for clients, organizing community festivals, and spearheading local measures. She recently organized Yes to Youth, a youth investment campaign to raise funds for youth development projects in the city of Sacramento. Kula is 24 years old and a graduate of UCLA with a B.A. in English.

DeWitt Lacy, Owner, Law Offices of DeWitt Lacy

DeWitt Lacy is a practicing Civil Rights attorney in San Francisco. Although his professional practice focuses primarily on individual liberties, DeWitt is also committed to the empowerment of disenfranchised groups through political action. Consequently, his plans include a run for local political office in 2010, after which, DeWitt plans to continue his legal practice.

Boniface Ndirangu, Director, Eden House Kenya Ltd.

Boniface G. M. Ndirangu knows the challenges of living in an urban African city having been born and raised in the slums of Nairobi, Kenya. He imagines and is passionate about developing an inclusive, comprehensive, centralized community organization model that empowers its citizens to find solutions. He has been involved in various community campaign issues and is regarded as an emerging, progressive young leader. He is currently residing in Berkeley, California, working on his MBA thesis in finance for the University of Nairobi.

Marina Pol Longo, Associate, FSG Social Impact Advisors

Marina Pol Longo is currently an associate with FSG Social Impact Advisors, a non profit consulting firm that works with its clients to accelerate social change. Her previous experience includes working as a consultant for McKinsey and Company in Spain, global development and, most recently, advising Spark, a San Francisco-based after-school organization, in their national roll-out. Marina holds an M.B.A. from ESADE, Spain and an M.A. in International Management from the Community of European Management Schools (Spain and Germany) and she wrote her Master's thesis on Professionalizing of Public Management as a leading researcher in a study commissioned by the Official School for Public Management.

Jason Shafton, Local Markets Strategy & Operations Associate, Google Inc.

Jason Shafton came to the Bay Area from the Midwest where he studied marketing at the University of Wisconsin. In 2000, he founded his record company - Rubber Room Records - which he still runs today. Jason joined Google in 2006 where he manages partnerships with advertising agencies. Having worked in a variety of roles in the music industry, technology and philanthropy, Jason is passionate about music, computers, politics and social change. He currently lives in San Jose with his fiance' Lisa and two cats, Janis and Carly.

Ian Thomson, Founder, CleanTech Human Capital

Ian Thomson is a passionate sustainability advocate and the founder of CleanTechies and CleanTech Human Capital, two service companies for the Clean/Green Technology sector. Born into a Colombian-American family he has spent more than half of his life in the Middle East, Latin America and Europe. He is a former Marine Corps officer and is actively working to address veteran employment concerns. He holds a BA in International Relations from Boston University and an MBA from IESE University in Barcelona, Spain.

Joshua To, Program Manager, Google Inc.

Joshua To is the co-founder of BRUTE LABS and thrives on energizing people to work together. Josh loves big ideas and is passionate about the role that design plays in business and humanitarian projects. He loves to travel and is dying to go to Iceland.
